Effexor XR
Effexor XR is a medicine from antidepressant class of drug used for the treatment of depression, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and social anxiety disorder. The main ingredient of Effexor XR is Venlafaxine Hydrochloride and one capsule contains 37.5, 75, or 150 mg Venlafaxine. Each capsule or tablet should be swallowed whole with fluid and not should be divided, crushed, chewed, dissolved in water. Another way is, by carefully opening the capsule and sprinkling the entire contents of Effexor XR on a spoonful of apple sauce. This drug & food mixture should be swallowed immediately without chewing and followed with a glass of water to ensure complete swallowing of the pill.

Effexor XR Prescription:
Effexor XR is available only with doctor’s prescription in the form of extended-release capsules and tablets. The patient should follow doctor’s advice or the direction on the label. The following information includes the average doses of Effexor XR.
Mental depression patients should take:
Oral extended-release capsule dosage:
Adults: Initially, 75 mg a day, taken in one dose in the morning or evening. The doctor will increase the dose if required.
Children: dosage must be determined by a doctor only.
Oral tablet dosage:
Adults: Initially, a total of 75 mg a day, taken in smaller doses two or three times during the day. The doctor will increase the dose if required.
Children up to 18 years of age: dosage must be determined by a doctor only.
Anxiety patients should take:
Oral extended-release capsule dosage:
Adults: Initially, 75 mg a day, taken in one dose in the morning or evening. The doctor will increase the dose if required.
Children: dosage must be determined by a doctor only.
Panic disorder patients should take:
Oral extended-release capsule dosage:
Adults: At first, 37.5 mg a day, taken in one dose in the morning or evening for 7 days. The doctor will increase the dose if required.
Children: Use and dosage must be determined by a doctor only.
Effexor XR Missed Dose:
If it is within 2 hours of your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Please do not double your doses in any situation.
Effexor XR Overdose:
The symptoms of an Effexor overdose include dizziness, sleepiness, nausea, numbness or tingling in your hands or feet, agitation; seizures; drowsiness; extreme tiredness or weakness ; fast heartbeat; tingling, burning, or prickling sensations; and trembling or shaking. If you have taken an overdose of this medicine, seek emergency medical attention.
Side Effects of Effexor XR:
Stop taking Effexor XR and seek emergency medical treatment if you have any of the following serious side effects,
- An allergic reaction like difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or itching;
- Low blood pressure
- High blood pressure
- Fever and chills.
Continue to take Effexor XR after consulting your doctor if you experience the following less serious side effects
- sweating;
- blurred vision;
- Insomnia;
- Weakness;
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation;
- Changes in appetite or weight;
- Dry mouth;
- Tremor, nervousness, anxiety;
- Decreased libido, impotence, or difficulty having an orgasm
* Talk to your doctor about any side effect other than the following that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.
Effexor XR Precaution
It is very important that your health care professional knows all the medications you are taking, specially the following Buspirone, Bromocriptine, certain tricyclic antidepressants, clomipramine, imipramine, Dextromethorphan, Levodopa, Lithium, Meperidine, Nefazodone, Pentazocine, Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, fluvoxamine, paroxetine, sertraline, Street drugs LSD, MDMA, Monoamine oxidase inhibitor activity, phenelzine, procarbazine, selegiline, tranylcypromine, Warfarin. At the same time, the doctor must know about your health problems, specially bipolar disorder, brain disease or damage, or mental retardation or seizures, dehydration, glaucoma or pressure within the eye, heart disease or high or low blood pressure, heart attack, heart failure or hyperthyroidism, kidney disease or liver disease or cirrhosis of the liver, mania and weight loss.
